Welcome to BIOLOGY!
This year we will give you a broad general understanding of the fundamental principles of biology and extension of understanding in certain areas. During this school year, we will complete the following units of study:
First Semester
- Biology Basics: Observations, Scientific Method, Lab equipment and use, Chemistry, Periodic table, Atoms, and Macromolecules
- Cells and Cell Cycle: Organelles, Cell theory, Cell transport,
- Energy Flow: Enzymes, ATP, Energy Flow through Ecosystems, Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration
- Homeostasis: Regulation and Feedback Mechanisms, Signaling and Communication, System Interactions
Second Semester
- Genetics: DNA structure and Replication, Protein Synthesis, and Meiosis
- Heredity: Mendelian Genetics, Complex Inheritance Patterns, Mutations and Pedigrees, and Genetic Engineering
- Pathogens: Structure and Reproduction, Disease, Defense
- Plants: Structure, Reproduction, Adaptation
- Evolution: Natural Selection, Patterns of Evolution, Evidence of Evolution, and Phylogeny
- Ecology: Introduction to Ecology, Biogeochemical Cycles, Population Ecology, Human Impact, Ecological Succession, Relationships
