The Joaquin Bustoz Math-Science Honors Program (JBMSHP) is intended for motivated students who are interested in careers requiring mathematics coursework and are typically underrepresented in those fields of study. Participants live on the Arizona State University (ASU) Tempe campus while enrolled in a university-level mathematics course worth three college credits. Participants attend class daily, complete homework assignments and exams, and attend tutoring sessions. Students also learn valuable college and academic success information that will help them successfully transition to college.
Special consideration is given to students who are first-generation college-bound, traditionally underrepresented in STEM, and/or represent diverse backgrounds throughout the State of Arizona, including rural communities and Native Nations.
Cost:
The JBMSHP is FREE to attend (includes tuition, room and board, and classroom materials).
Housing requirement:
Students are required to reside on the ASU Tempe campus from Sunday night to Friday afternoon for the duration of the JBMSHP. Only students who live outside of the Phoenix metropolitan area are welcome to stay on the weekends.
Attendance commitment:
Please note that the JBMSHP is a six (6) week commitment and students are expected to attend all class sessions Monday - Friday. Students are NOT permitted to miss any days to attend another summer experience (ex: conference, sports camp, or summer program).
The following 3-credit university courses will be offered during the summer:
Date: June 1 – July 11, 2025
MAT 117: College Algebra
MAT 170: Pre-Calculus
MAT 265: Calculus for Engineers I
* MAT 266: Calculus for Engineers II
*Students interested in MAT 266 must complete MAT 265 equivalent credit by May 2025 (either by dual enrollment, AP exam score of 3 or higher, or college credit).
