Ms. Evans' English Courses

Hello!

My name is Ms. Rachel Evans, and I teach Accelerated 9th grade, 9th grade, and 11th grade English classes at Winslow High School. I received my B.S.Ed. from Northern Arizona University, and I am certified to teach English for grades 9-12 in Arizona. I moved from the sunny state of California to Arizona to pursue a career in education.

After receiving my Bachelors, I spent some time working in after school programs with elementary students. These programs fueled my drive to teach even more.

In Accelerated 9th and 9th grade English courses, students will explore literature from 300 B.C.E. to the 21st Century. They will expand their knowledge on literary elements (plot, theme, characters, rhetoric, etc.) and how authors use these tools to tell their stories. Essays that students will accomplish are narrative essays, expository essays, and persuasive/argumentative essays in MLA format.  We will read and interact with informational material as well as fictional novels and short stories, culminating with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Accelerated 9th grade will be challenged by exploring extra texts and creating essays around the stories the class will read. Projects will be a product of analyzing further the texts we read in class.

In 11th grade courses, students will explore American Literature starting from Native American Tales to 21st Century texts. They will expand their knowledge on literary elements (plot, theme, characters, rhetoric, etc.) and how authors use these tools to tell their stories. Essays that students will accomplish are narrative essays, argumentative essays, and research paper. For the research paper, students will choose a topic and create a MLA formatted essay.  We will read and interact with a large amount of historical material as well as fictional plays and short stories, like the Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

Thank you.
